În chimie, hidrofobicitatea este proprietatea fizică a unei molecule care este respinsă dintr-o masă de apă. Moleculele hidrofobe tind să fie nepolar și, astfel, preferă alte molecule neutre și solvenți nepolari. Moleculele hidrofobe din apă se adună adesea, formând miceli. Apa pe suprafețe hidrofobe va prezenta un unghi de contact ridicat. Exemple de molecule hidrofobe includ alcani, uleiuri, grăsimi și substanțe grase în general. Materialele hidrofobe sunt utilizate pentru îndepărtarea uleiului din apă, gestionarea scurgerilor de petrol și procesele de separare chimică pentru îndepărtarea substanțelor nepolare din compușii polari. Hidrofobul este adesea folosit interschimbabil cu lipofile, "iubitoare de grăsimi". Cu toate acestea, cei doi termeni nu sunt sinonimi. Deși substanțele hidrofobe sunt de obicei lipofile, există excepții - cum ar fi siliconii și fluorocarburile.
