Impressionismul este o mișcare de artă din secolul al XIX-lea, care provine dintr-un grup de artiști de la Paris. Expozițiile lor independente le-au adus în prim-plan în anii 1870 și 1880, în ciuda opoziției dure a comunității de artă convențională din Franța. Numele stilului derivă din titlul unei lucrări a lui Claude Monet, Impression, soleil levant, care la provocat pe criticul Louis Leroy să o prezinte în revistă satirică publicată în ziarul parizian Le Charivari. Caracteristicile de pictura impresionistă includ curbele relativ mici, subțiri, dar vizibile ale pensulelor, compoziția deschisă, accentul pe o reprezentare precisă a luminii în calitățile sale în schimbare, subiectul obișnuit, includerea mișcării ca element crucial al percepției și experienței umane și unghiuri neobișnuite vizuale.
