Inoculare
Inocularea a fost o metodă istorică pentru prevenirea variolei prin introducerea deliberată în piele a materialului din pustule de variolă. Aceasta a generat, în general, o infecție mai puțin severă decât variolacul natural, dar a provocat imunitate la aceasta. Termenul a intrat în engleza medicală prin folosirea horticolă, ceea ce înseamnă a altoi un mugur de la o plantă la alta. Acesta este derivat din latină în + oculus. Deși inoculările / inoculările sunt uneori văzute, acest lucru este incorect, posibil gândit în mod eronat a fi legat de inofensiv, care derivă din latină în + nocuus.
