Spațiul exterior, sau pur și simplu spațiul, este golul care există între corpurile cerești, inclusiv pe Pământ. Nu este complet gol, ci constă într-un vid tare care conține o densitate mică a particulelor: predominant o plasmă de hidrogen și heliu, precum și radiații electromagnetice, câmpuri magnetice, neutrini, praf și raze cosmice. Temperatura de referință, așa cum este stabilită de radiația de fond din Big Bang, este de 2,7 kelvin. Plasma cu densitate mai mică de un atom de hidrogen pe metru cub și o temperatură de milioane de kelvin în spațiul dintre galaxii reprezintă cea mai mare parte a materiei baryonice din spațiul cosmic; concentrațiile locale s-au condensat în stele și în galaxii. În majoritatea galaxiilor, observațiile arată că 90% din masă este într-o formă necunoscută, numită materie întunecată, care interacționează cu alte materii prin forțe gravitaționale, dar nu electromagnetice. Datele indică faptul că majoritatea energiei de masă din Universul observabil este o energie de vid a spațiului prost înțeleasă, care astronomii etichetează energia întunecată.
