Jihadul, un termen islamic, este o datorie religioasă a musulmanilor. În arabă, cuvântul jihād se traduce ca un substantiv care înseamnă "luptă". Cuvântul jihad apare în 23 de versete coranice [1]. În contextul Islamului clasic, în special al credințelor lui Shiah, se referă la lupta împotriva celor care nu cred în Dumnezeul Avraamic. [2] Cu toate acestea, cuvântul are și implicații mai largi. Jihad înseamnă "a lupta în calea lui Allah". Jihadul apare de 41 de ori în Coran și frecvent în expresia idiomatică "luptă în calea lui Dumnezeu". [3] [4] [5] O persoană angajată în jihad este numită mujahid; pluralul este mujahideen. Jihadul este o datorie religioasă importantă pentru musulmani. O minoritate dintre savanții sunni se referă uneori la această datorie ca și al șaselea pilon al islamului, deși nu ocupă un astfel de statut oficial [6]. Totuși, în Twelver Shi'a Islam, jihadul este una dintre cele 10 practici ale religiei. Ahmadi musulmanii consideră că doar jihadul defensiv este permis în timp ce respinge jihadul ofensiv. Există două sensuri general acceptate ale jihadului: o luptă spirituală interioară și o luptă fizică exterioară.
