O societate pe acțiuni este o entitate comercială deținută de acționari. Fiecare acționar are propria parte a societății proporțional cu proprietatea asupra acțiunilor societății. Acest lucru permite o proprietate inegală a unei afaceri cu unii acționari care dețin o proporție mai mare a unei societăți decât alții. Acționarii își pot transfera acțiunile altora fără efecte asupra continuării existenței companiei. În dreptul modern corporativ, existența unei societăți pe acțiuni este adesea sinonimă cu încorporarea și răspunderea limitată. În consecință, societățile pe acțiuni sunt cunoscute sub denumirea de corporații sau societăți cu răspundere limitată. Unele jurisdicții oferă în continuare posibilitatea de a înregistra societăți pe acțiuni fără răspundere limitată. În Regatul Unit și în alte țări care și-au adoptat modelul de drept al societăților comerciale, acestea sunt cunoscute ca companii nelimitate. În Statele Unite, ele sunt cunoscute doar ca "societăți pe acțiuni".
