Limba Kannada
Kannada / kɑːnədə / sau / kænədə /, sau Kanarese / kænəriːz /, este o limbă vorbită în India, predominant în statul Karnataka. Kannada, al cărei vorbitori nativi se numesc Kannadigas ಕನ್ನಡತಿ și numărul de aproximativ 40 de milioane, este una dintre cele 40 de limbi cele mai vorbite din lume. Este una dintre limbile programate din India și limba oficială și administrativă a statului Karnataka. Limba Kannada este scrisă folosind scenariul Kannada, care a evoluat din scenariul Kadamba din secolul al V-lea. Kannada este atestată epigrafic pentru aproximativ o jumătate de mileniu, iar literatura veche Kannada a înflorit în timpul dinastiei Ganga din secolul al VI-lea și în timpul dinastiei Rashtrakuta din secolul al IX-lea. Kannada are o istorie literară neîntreruptă de peste o mie de ani. Pe baza recomandărilor Comitetului experților lingvistici numiți de Ministerul Culturii, guvernul Indiei a desemnat Kannada o limbă clasică a Indiei. În iulie 2011, un centru pentru studiul clasicului Kannada a fost înființat ca parte a Institutului Central de Limbi Indice din Mysore pentru a facilita cercetarea legată de limbă.
