Medicina contemporană aplică științele biomedicale, cercetarea biomedicală, genetica și tehnologia medicală pentru diagnosticarea, tratarea și prevenirea rănilor și a bolilor, de obicei prin medicație sau chirurgie, dar și prin terapii atât de diverse precum psihoterapia, tracțiune, proteze, biologici, produse farmaceutice, radiații ionizante, printre altele. Cuvântul medicină este derivat din ars medicina latină, adică arta vindecării.
