Microcodul este un strat de instrucțiuni la nivel de hardware sau structuri de date implicate în implementarea instrucțiunilor de cod de mașină de nivel superior în unitățile centrale de procesare și în implementarea logicii interne a mai multor controlere de canale, controlori de disc, controlori de interfață de rețea, unități de procesare grafică și alte componente hardware. Acesta se află în memorie specială de mare viteză și traduce instrucțiunile mașinii în secvențe de operații detaliate la nivel de circuit. Ajută la separarea instrucțiunilor mașinii de elementele electronice de bază, astfel încât instrucțiunile să poată fi proiectate și modificate mai liber. De asemenea, este fezabil să se construiască instrucțiuni complexe în mai multe etape, reducând totodată complexitatea circuitelor electronice în comparație cu alte metode. Scrierea microcodului este deseori numită microprogramare, iar microcodul într-o implementare specifică a procesorului este uneori numit microprogram. Microcodul modern este în mod normal scris de un inginer în timpul fazei de proiectare a procesorului și stocat într-o structură ROM sau PLA sau o combinație a celor două. Cu toate acestea, există și mașini care au unele microcode stocate în memoria SRAM sau flash.
