Mineritul este extracția mineralelor valoroase sau a altor materiale geologice de pe pământ dintr-o orebodă, bordură, vena, cusătura sau recif, care formează pachetul mineralizat de interes economic pentru miner. Minele recuperate prin minerit includ metale, cărbune, șisturi de petrol, pietre prețioase, calcar, piatră de dimensiuni, sare de rocă, potasă, pietriș și argilă. Mineritul este necesar pentru a obține orice material care nu poate fi cultivat prin procese agricole sau creat artificial într-un laborator sau într-o fabrică. Mineritul într-un sens mai larg include extracția oricărei resurse neregenerabile, cum ar fi petrolul, gazele naturale sau chiar apa. Extracția de piatră și metal a fost făcută încă din perioada preistorică. Procesele miniere moderne implică prospectarea corpurilor de minereu, analiza potențialului de profit al unei mină propusă, extragerea materialelor dorite și recuperarea finală a terenului după închiderea minei.
