Monodie
În poezie, termenul monodie a devenit specializat pentru a se referi la o poezie în care o persoană se plânge de moartea altcuiva. (În contextul literaturii grecești antice, monodia, monῳdia ar putea pur și simplu să se refere la poezia lirică cântată de un singur interpret, mai degrabă decât de un cor.) În muzică monodia are două sensuri: 1) uneori este folosită ca sinonim pentru monofonie , o singură linie solo, în opoziție cu homofonia și polifonie; și 2) în istoria muzicii, este un stil vocal solo distins prin faptul că are o singură linie melodică și acompanie instrumentală. Deși o astfel de muzică se găsește în diverse culturi de-a lungul istoriei, termenul este aplicat în mod specific cântecului italian de la începutul secolului al XVII-lea, în special perioada cuprinsă între 1600 și 1640. Termenul este folosit atât pentru stil, cât și pentru cântece individuale vorbește atât despre monodie ca întreg, cât și despre o singură monodie). Termenul în sine este o invenție recentă a savanților: niciun compozitor din secolul al XVII-lea nu a numit vreodată o piesă monodistă.
