Nestorianism
Nestorianismul este o doctrină hristologică avansată de Nestorius, Patriarhul de Constantinopol din anii 428-431. Doctrina, care a fost informată de studiile lui Nestorius sub Theodore of Mopsuestia la Școala Antiohiei, subliniază disjuncția dintre natura umană și divină a lui Isus. Învățăturile lui Nestorius l-au adus în conflict cu alți lideri biserici proeminenți, în special cu Chiril al Alexandriei, care au criticat în special respingerea titlului Theotokos pentru Fecioara Maria. Nestorie și învățăturile sale au fost în cele din urmă condamnate ca eretice la Primul Consiliu al Efesului din 431 și la Conciliul de la Calcedon în 451, ducând la Schismul nestorian în care bisericile care îl susținau pe Nestorius au rupt cu restul Bisericii creștine. După aceea, mulți dintre susținătorii lui Nestorius s-au mutat în Sassanid Persia, unde s-au afiliat la comunitatea creștină locală, cunoscută sub numele de Biserica Estului. În următoarele decenii, Biserica Răsăritului a devenit din ce în ce mai nestoriană în doctrină, ducând-o să fie cunoscută alternativ ca Biserica nestoriană.
