Newgate a fost una dintre cele șapte porți istorice ale zidului londonez din jurul orașului Londra și unul dintre cele șase care datează din epoca romană. Din acesta, un drum roman a condus vestul spre Silchester, Hampshire. Excavațiile din 1875, 1903 și 1909 au dezvăluit structura romană și au arătat că aceasta a constat într-o carieră dublă între două turnuri de gardă pătrată. Din secolul al XII-lea cel puțin, poarta a fost folosită ca închisoare pentru debitori și infractori. Aceasta, nota de închisoare Newgate, a fost ulterior extinsă spre sud pe locul curții moderne penale moderne de pe Old Bailey. Poarta a fost demolată în 1767. Newgate Street, astăzi parte a traseului A40 de la Londra până la Fishguard, se află în cea mai mare parte în interiorul zidului orașului, mergând la vest de Lacul Cheapside spre locul poarta veche, apoi continuând pe Viaductul Holborn, vechea arteră Bailey se alătură la sud și strada Giltspur spre nord. La nord de stradă se află ruinele Bisericii Hristoase Greyfriars pe locul unei mănăstiri medievale franciscane.
