În clasa nobilă există adesea o varietate de grade. Recunoașterea juridică a nobilimii a fost mai frecventă în monarhii, dar nobilimea a existat și în republicile republicilor precum Republica Olandeză, Republica Genova și Republica Veneția și rămâne parte a structurii juridice sociale a unor regimuri ereditare, de ex. San Marino și orașul Vatican din Europa.
