Masturbarea este actul sexual care implică stimularea auto-sexuală a organelor genitale pentru excitare sexuală sau alte plăceri sexuale, de obicei până la punctul de orgasm. Stimularea poate fi efectuată utilizând o mână sau degete, precum și obiecte de zi cu zi sau o jucărie sexuală. Mutualitatea reciprocă, stimularea manuală reciprocă a organelor genitale între parteneri, poate fi un substitut pentru penetrarea sexuală. Studiile au constatat că masturbarea este frecventă la omul de ambele sexe și la toate vârstele, deși există variații. Diferite beneficii medicale și psihologice au fost atribuite unei atitudini sănătoase față de activitatea sexuală în general și în special cu masturbarea. Nu se cunoaște o relație de cauzalitate între masturbare și orice formă de tulburare mentală sau fizică. Masturbarea a fost descrisă în artă încă din perioada preistorică și este menționată și discutată în scrieri foarte timpurii. În secolele al XVIII-lea și al XIX-lea, unii teologi și medici europeni l-au descris ca fiind "răutăcios", "deplorabil" și "hideous", dar în secolul XX aceste tabuuri au scăzut în general. Sa înregistrat o creștere a discuțiilor și a portretizării masturbării în artă, muzică populară, televiziune, filme și literatură.
