O feromon este un factor chimic secretat sau excretat care declanșează un răspuns social la membrii aceleiași specii. Feromonii sunt substanțe chimice capabile să acționeze în afara corpului persoanei secretoare pentru a influența comportamentul persoanei care o primește. Există feromonii de alarmă, feromonii din fermele de mâncare, feromonii sexuali și multe altele care afectează comportamentul sau fiziologia. Feromonii sunt utilizați din prokaryotes unicelular de bază la eucariote multicelulare complexe. Utilizarea lor în rândul insectelor a fost foarte bine documentată. În plus, unele vertebrate și plante comunică prin utilizarea feromonilor.
