Termenul de phonation are înțelesuri puțin diferite, în funcție de subdomeniul fonetic. Printre unii foneticieni, phonarea este procesul prin care faldurile vocale produc anumite sunete prin vibrații cvasi-periodice. Aceasta este definiția utilizată în rândul celor care studiază anatomia laringiană și fiziologia și producția de vorbire în general. Phoneticienii din alte subcâmpuri, cum ar fi fonetica lingvistică, numesc acest proces exprimând și folosesc termenul de phonation pentru a se referi la orice stare oscilantă a oricărei părți a laringelui care modifică fluxul de aer, a cărui exprimare este doar un exemplu. Fonturile fără voce și supra-glotale sunt incluse în această definiție.
