Fotogrametria este o metodă științifică estimativă care urmărește recuperarea pozițiilor exacte și a căilor de mișcare ale punctelor de referință desemnate, situate pe orice obiect în mișcare, pe componentele sale și în mediul imediat adiacent. Fotogrammetria utilizează imaginile de mare viteză și metodele exacte de detectare la distanță pentru a detecta, măsura și înregistra câmpurile complexe de mișcare 2-D și 3-D. Fotogrammetria alimentează măsurătorile de la teledetecție și rezultatele analizei imaginilor în modele computaționale, în încercarea de a estima succesiv, cu precizie crescândă, propriile mișcări relative 3-D din câmpul cercetat. Aplicațiile sale includ urmărirea prin satelit a modificărilor relative de poziționare în toate mediile Pământului, cercetarea privind înotul de pește, zborul de păsări sau insecte, alte procese relative de mișcare.
