Post-căpitanul este o formă alternativă învechită de rang de căpitan în Royal Navy. Termenul a servit pentru a distinge pe cei care erau căpitani de rang: ▪ Ofițeri care conduceau o navă navală, cărora li sa adresat căpitanul, indiferent de rang; ▪ Comandanții, care au primit titlul de căpitan drept curtoazie, indiferent dacă aveau sau nu comandă în prezent; acest obicei este acum defunct. Odată ce un ofițer a fost promovat la post-căpitan, promovarea sa ulterioară era strict vechimică; dacă ar putea evita moartea sau rușinea, în cele din urmă ar deveni amiral. În marina regală a acelui timp, un ofițer ar putea avea un rang, dar nu o comandă. Până când ofițerul avea o comandă, el era "pe plajă" și pe jumătate plătit. Un ofițer care a fost promovat de la comandant era un căpitan, dar până când i sa dat o comandă, el era pe jumătate plătit.
