Psihologia este o disciplină academică și aplicată care implică studiul științific al funcțiilor și comportamentelor mentale. Psihologia are ca obiectiv imediat înțelegerea indivizilor și a grupurilor prin stabilirea unor principii generale și prin cercetarea unor cazuri specifice, iar prin multe contexte, în final, are drept scop să beneficieze societatea. Psihologii încearcă să înțeleagă rolul funcțiilor mentale în comportamentul individual și social, explorând de asemenea procesele fiziologice și biologice care stau la baza funcțiilor și comportamentelor cognitive. Psihologii explorează concepte precum percepția, cunoașterea, atenția, emoția, fenomenologia, motivația, funcționarea creierului, personalitatea, comportamentul și relațiile interpersonale, inclusiv reziliența psihologică, rezistența familială și alte domenii. Psihologii de diferite orientări iau în considerare și mintea inconștientă. Psihologii folosesc metode empirice pentru a deduce relațiile cauzale și corelaționale între variabilele psihosociale.
