Ptolemeu
Claudius Ptolemeu a fost un scriitor greco-egiptean din Alexandria, cunoscut ca matematician, astronom, geograf, astrolog și poet al unei singure epigrame din Antologia greacă. El a locuit în orașul Alexandria, în provincia romană Egipt, a scris în greacă și a deținut cetățenia romană. Dincolo de asta, sunt cunoscute câteva detalii fiabile ale vieții sale. Locul său de naștere a fost dat ca Ptolemais Hermiou în Thebaid, într-o declarație necontrolată a astronomului din secolul al 14-lea, Theodore Meliteniotes. Aceasta este totuși o atestare foarte târzie și nu există niciun alt motiv să presupunem că a trăit vreodată în altă parte decât Alexandria, unde a murit în jurul anului 168 d.Hr. Ptolemeu a fost autorul mai multor tratate științifice, dintre care trei aveau o importanță continuă mai târziu știință islamică și europeană. Primul este tratatul astronomic cunoscut acum ca Almagest. Al doilea este Geografia, care este o discuție aprofundată a cunoașterii geografice a lumii greco-romane.
