René Karl Wilhelm Johann Josef Maria Rilke - mai bine cunoscută sub numele de Rainer Maria Rilke - a fost un poet și un romancier austriac bosniacă, "recunoscut pe scară largă ca fiind unul dintre cei mai lirici poeți în limba germană", scrisă atât în versuri, cât și în proza extrem de lirică. Mai mulți critici au descris lucrarea lui Rilke drept inerent "mistic". Scrierile sale includ un roman, mai multe colecții de poezie și mai multe volume de corespondență în care invoca imagini bântuitoare care se concentrează pe dificultatea comuniunii cu inefabilul într-o epocă de neîncredere, singurătate și anxietate profundă. Aceste teme profund existențiale tind să-l poziționeze ca o figură de tranziție între scriitorii tradiționali și moderniști. Rilke sa născut în Imperiul Austro-Ungar, călătorea extensiv în întreaga Europă și Africa de Nord, inclusiv Rusia, Spania, Germania, Franța, Italia, iar în ultimii ani stabilit în Elveția - setări care au fost cheia genezei și inspirației pentru multe dintre poemele lui. În timp ce Rilke este cel mai cunoscut pentru contribuțiile sale la literatura germană, peste 400 de poezii au fost inițial scrise în franceză și dedicate cantonului Valais din Elveția.
