Shema Yisrael
Shema Yisrael sunt primele două cuvinte dintr-o secțiune a Torei și este titlul unei rugăciuni care servește drept centru al serviciilor de rugăciune de dimineață și de seară. Primul verset încapsulează esența monoteistă a iudaismului: "Ascultă, Israel, DOMNUL Dumnezeul nostru, DOMNUL este unul", descoperit în Deuteronom 6: 4, uneori alternativ tradus ca "DOMNUL este Dumnezeul nostru, singur DOMNUL". Iudeii observatori consideră că Shema este cea mai importantă parte a serviciului de rugăciune în iudaism și recitarea lui de două ori pe zi ca mitzvah. Este tradițional pentru evrei să spună Shema ca ultimul lor cuvânt și pentru ca părinții să-i învețe pe copiii să-i spună înainte de a merge la culcare noaptea. Termenul "Shema" este folosit prin extensie pentru a se referi la întreaga parte a rugăciunilor zilnice care începe cu Shema Yisrael și cuprinde Deuteronom 6: 4-9, 11: 13-21 și Numeri 15: 37-41. Aceste secțiuni ale Torei sunt citite în porțiunile săptămânale Torah Va'etchanan, Eikev și Shlach, respectiv.
