Splashdown

Splashdown este metoda de aterizare a unei nave spațiale prin parașută într-un corp de apă. A fost folosită de nave spațiale americane cu echipaj uman înainte de programul Space Shuttle și este planificată pentru utilizarea de către viitorul echipaj de echipaj Orion Multipurpose. De asemenea, este posibil ca navele spațiale Soyuz rusești și navele chineze Shenzhou să aterizeze în apă, deși acest lucru este doar o situație de urgență. Singurul exemplu al unei invazii neintenționate în istoria sovietică este aterizarea Soyuz 23. După cum sugerează și numele, capsula parașută într-un ocean sau alt corp de apă mare. Proprietatile pernei de apa sunt suficient de spatiale pentru ca nu mai este nevoie de o racheta de franare pentru a incetini coborarea finala, asa cum a fost cazul cu capsulele spațiale rusești și chinezești care s-au întors pe Pământ pe uscat.
