Suferința sau durerea într-un sens larg reprezintă o experiență de neplăcere și aversiune asociată cu percepția de rău sau de amenințare cu rău la un individ. Suferința este elementul de bază care constituie valența negativă a fenomenelor afective. Suferința poate fi calificată ca fiind fizică sau mentală. Poate să vină în toate gradele de intensitate, de la ușoară la intolerabilă. Factorii de durată și frecvența apariției comportă de obicei intensitatea. Atitudinile față de suferință pot varia foarte mult, în suferință sau în alte persoane, în funcție de cât de mult se consideră evitabilă sau inevitabilă, folositoare sau inutilă, meritată sau nemeritată. Suferința apare în viața ființelor simțitoare în numeroase maniere și adesea dramatic. Ca rezultat, multe domenii ale activității umane sunt îngrijorate, din punct de vedere propriu, cu unele aspecte ale suferinței. Aceste aspecte pot include natura suferinței, procesele sale, originea și cauzele acesteia, semnificația și semnificația acesteia, comportamentele personale, sociale, culturale, remediile, gestionarea și utilizările acesteia.
