Sumatra, este o insulă din vestul Indonezia și parte din Insulele Sunda. Este cea mai mare insulă care se află în întregime în Indonezia și a șasea cea mai mare insulă din lume, la 480.847,74 km2, cu o populație actuală de peste 50 de milioane de locuitori. Cel mai mare oraș al său este Medan, cu peste 4 milioane în zona metropolitană. Sumatra este un teren alungit care se întinde pe o axă diagonală nord-vest-sud-est. Oceanul Indian frontierează vestul, nord-vestul și sud-vestul insulei Sumatra cu lanțul insulei Simeulue, Nias și Mentawai, care se învecinează cu coasta sud-vestică. În partea de nord-est strâmtoarea îngustă din Malacca separă insula de Peninsula Malay, o extensie a continentului eurasiatic. În sud-est strâmtoarea strâmtă Sunda separă Sumatra de Java. Vârful nordic al Sumatrei se învecinează cu Insulele Andaman, în partea inferioară a estului fiind insulele Bangka și Belitung, strâmtoarea Karimata și Marea Java. Munții Bukit Barisan, care conțin mai mulți vulcani activi, formează coloana vertebrală a insulei, în timp ce laturile nord-est ale țării sunt delimitate cu mlaștinile, mangrovele și sistemele fluviale complexe.
