Un turneu de sistem elvețian este un format de turneu fără eliminare. Există mai multe runde de competiție, dar cu mult mai puține runde decât într-un turneu cu robinet, astfel încât fiecare concurent să nu joace fiecare competitor. Competitorii se întâlnesc câte unul la unu în fiecare rundă și se împerechează folosind un set predeterminat de reguli, conceput astfel încât să se asigure că, pe cât posibil, un concurent joacă concurenți cu același scor actual, sub rezerva ca aceștia să nu mai joace același adversar de mai multe ori. Câștigătorul este concurentul cu cele mai mari puncte agregate câștigate în toate rundele. Primul turneu de acest tip a fost un turneu de șah în Zürich în 1895, de unde și denumirea "sistem elvețian". Sistemul elvețian poate fi folosit atunci când nu este posibil să se joace cât mai multe runde decât este necesar într-un turneu rotund, dar nu se dorește eliminarea oricăror concurenți înainte de sfârșitul turneului. Există un număr predeterminat de runde și un sistem de punctare predeterminat. Toți concurenții joacă în fiecare rundă, cu excepția cazului în care există un număr impar de concurenți.
