Simbolism (arte)
Simbolismul a fost o mișcare de artă din secolul al XIX-lea, de origine franceză, rusă și belgiană, în poezie și alte arte. În literatură, stilul își are începuturile cu publicația Les Fleurs du mal de Charles Baudelaire. Lucrările lui Edgar Allan Poe, pe care Baudelaire le-a admirat foarte mult și traduse în franceză, au fost o influență semnificativă și sursa multor tropesuri și imagini. Estetica a fost dezvoltată de Stéphane Mallarmé și Paul Verlaine în anii 1860 și 70. În anii 1880, estetica a fost articulată printr-o serie de manifestări și a atras o generație de scriitori. Numele "simbolist" însuși a fost aplicat pentru prima oară de criticul Jean Moréas, care a inventat termenul pentru a distinge simbolicii de decadentele legate de literatură și de artă. Distins, dar legat de stilul literaturii, simbolismul artei este legat de componenta gotică a romantismului.
