În geometrie, linia tangentă (sau pur și simplu tangentă) la o curbă plană la un anumit punct este linia dreaptă care "atinge" doar curba în acel punct. În mod informal, este o linie printr-o pereche de puncte infinit de aproape de pe curbă. Mai precis, o linie dreaptă se consideră a fi o tangență a curbei y = f (x) la un punct x = c pe curbă dacă linia trece prin punctul (c, f (c)) pe curbă și are panta f '(c) unde f' este derivatul f. O definiție similară se aplică curbelor și curbelor de spațiu în spațiul euclidian n-dimensional. Pe măsură ce trece prin punctul în care se întâlnește linia tangentă și curba, numită punct de tangență, linia tangentă "merge în aceeași direcție" cu curba și, prin urmare, este cea mai bună aproximare lineară cu curba la acea punct. În mod similar, planul tangent la o suprafață la un anumit punct este planul care "atinge doar" suprafața din acel moment. Conceptul de tangentă este una dintre cele mai fundamentale noțiuni din geometria diferențială și a fost generalizată pe scară largă; a se vedea spațiul Tangent.
