Allegedly coined in 1833 by Richard Turner, English advocate of total abstinence from alcoholic liquors; probably from total, with emphatic reduplication.

Mișcarea teetotalismului a fost inițial inițiată în Preston, Anglia la începutul secolului al XIX-lea. Societatea Preston Temperance a fost înființată în 1833 de către Joseph Livesey, care urma să devină lider al mișcării de temperanță și autor al Proiectului: "Suntem de acord să ne abținem de la toate băuturile cu o stare de intoxicare, fie că este vorba despre bere, porter, vin sau spirite înflăcărate , cu excepția medicamentelor.
