Un testbed este o platformă pentru experimentarea unor proiecte de dezvoltare mari. Testele de testare permit testarea riguroasă, transparentă și replicabilă a teoriilor științifice, a instrumentelor de calcul și a noilor tehnologii. Termenul este utilizat în mai multe discipline pentru a descrie un mediu de dezvoltare care este protejat de pericolele testării într-un mediu viu sau de producție. Este o metodă de testare a unui anumit modul într-o manieră izolată. Poate fi implementată similar cu o cutie de nisip, dar nu neapărat în scopuri de securitate. Un testbed este folosit ca dovadă a conceptului sau atunci când un nou modul este testat în afară de programul / sistemul la care va fi adăugat mai târziu. Un cadru de schelet este implementat în jurul modulului, astfel încât modulul se comportă ca și cum ar fi deja parte a programului mai mare. Un tip de test tipic ar putea include componente software, hardware și componente de rețea.
