Thalidomida este un medicament imunomodulator și prototipul clasei de medicamente pentru talidomide. A fost comercializată pentru prima dată în 1957 în Germania de Vest, sub denumirea comercială Contergan. Compania germană de medicamente Chemie Grünenthal a dezvoltat și a vândut drogul. In primul rand, prescris ca sedativ sau hipnotic, talidomida a pretins, de asemenea, vindecarea "anxietatii, insomniei, gastritei si tensiunii", dupa care a fost folosita impotriva greatei si pentru ameliorarea bolii diminetii la femeile gravide. 1, 1957.
