Titan
Titanul este un element chimic cu simbolul Ti și numărul atomic 22. Este un metal de tranziție lucios, cu o culoare argintie, densitate scăzută și rezistență ridicată. Este foarte rezistent la coroziune în apa de mare, acvariu și clor. Titanul a fost descoperit în Cornwall, Marea Britanie, de William Gregor în 1791 și numit de Martin Heinrich Klaproth pentru titanii mitologiei grecești. Elementul are loc într-o serie de depozite minerale, în principal rutile și ilmenitul, care sunt distribuite pe scară largă în crusta și litosfera pământului și se găsesc în aproape toate lucrurile vii, roci, corpuri de apă și soluri. Metalul este extras din minereurile minerale principale prin procesul Kroll sau prin procesul Hunter. Cel mai obișnuit compus, dioxid de titan, este un fotocatalizator popular și se folosește la fabricarea pigmenților albi. Alți compuși includ tetraclorura de titan, o componentă a ecranelor de fum și a catalizatorilor; și triclorură de titan, care este utilizată ca un catalizator în producția de polipropilenă.
