Un transect este o cale de-a lungul căreia contează și înregistrează evenimentele fenomenelor de studiu. Ea necesită ca un observator să se deplaseze de-a lungul unei căi fixe și să contorizeze aparițiile de-a lungul căii și, în același timp, să obțină distanța obiectului de pe cale. Aceasta are ca rezultat o estimare a suprafeței acoperite și o estimare a modului în care detectabilitatea crește de la probabilitatea 0 la 1. Folosind numărul brut și această funcție de probabilitate se poate ajunge la o estimare a densității reale a obiectelor.
