Tifosul este oricare din mai multe boli similare cauzate de bacteriile Rickettsia. Numele provine de la tifosul grecesc, care înseamnă fum sau fum, descriind starea de spirit a celor afectați de tifos. Organismul cauzator Rickettsia este o bacterie obligatorie de paraziți care nu poate supraviețui pentru celulele vii din exterior. Typhus nu trebuie confundat cu febra tifoidă. În timp ce "tifoid" înseamnă "tifos", bolile sunt distincte și sunt cauzate de diferite specii de bacterii.
