Atunci când diferența de potențial electric dintre interiorul și exteriorul celulei este observată printr-o metodă cum ar fi un electrod de celule depolarizante, interiorul filmului care nu este excitat este electric negativ în comparație cu exteriorul. Cu alte cuvinte, membrana celulară este polarizată electric pe partea exterioară. Această diferență de potențial se referă la potențialul staționar sau la potențialul membranei (potențialul membranei). Deci, atunci când curentul curge spre exterior (peste membrana celulară), magnitudinea potențialului staționar scade. Reducerea potențialului staționar este o reducere a diferenței de potențial în film, care este un proces în care dispare polarizarea filmului și acest fenomen se numește depolarizare. În general, cauza depolarizării se numește depolarizare, iar potențialul de acțiune este o depolarizare într-un sens larg.
