Hemoglobina este proteina care transportă oxigen la țesuturile organului respirabil calmant și dioxidul de carbon și protonul din țesuturi până la tractul respirator. Se găsește în eritrocite. Oxigenul se leagă cu ambele molecule conținând +2 valență de fier. Principalul site de sinteză este măduva osoasă în timpul producției de eritrocite. Diferențele minore în ceea ce privește vârsta, sexul și speciile sunt, de asemenea, o anemie mai mică decât o anumită valoare, iar policitemia este cunoscută ca fiind prezentă în cantități mari. Hemoglobina este grupul protetic, iar proteina este globulina.
