En geniş anlamıyla ahenk, tonal bir merkezi veya anahtarı olmayan müziktir. Bu anlamda mitolojik olarak, genellikle, 1908'den günümüze kadar yazılmış ve tek bir merkez seste odaklanan bir sahanın hiyerarşisinin kullanılmadığı kompozisyonlar ve kromatik ölçek notları birbirinden bağımsız olarak tanımlanmaktadır.
