Kaliperin uçları, ölçülecek noktalardan sığacak şekilde ayarlanır, kaliper çıkarılır ve cetvel gibi bir ölçüm aleti ile uçlar arasındaki mesafe ölçülerek mesafe okunur. Sözlükte kaliperin ilk tanımı da denir: kaliper, birbirine menteşeli iki çelik bacaktan oluşan dahili veya harici ölçüleri ölçen bir aletle pusulasır.
