Bir castrato, bir soprano, mezzo-soprano ya da contralto'nunkine denk klasik bir erkek sese benzeyen bir ses türüdür. Ses, ergenlik öncesi şarkıcının kastrasyonuyla üretilir veya bir endokrinolojik şart nedeniyle hiçbir zaman cinsel olgunluğa ulaşmayan birinde oluşur. Ergenlik öncesi kastrasyon, bir oğlanın gırtlaklannın ergenlik döneminin normal fizyolojik olayları tarafından dönüştürülmesini önler.
