Vicdan, doğru ile yanlış arasındaki ayrımcılık yapmada yardımcı olan bir yetenek, fakülte, sezgi ya da yargıdır. Ahlaki yargı değerleri veya normlardan türetilebilir. Psikolojik terimlerle, vicdan, insanların ahlaki değerlerine aykırı eylemlerde bulunmaları ve bu tür normlara uygun eylemlerde düzgünlük ya da dürüstlük hissetmeleri durumunda pişmanlık duygularını doğurduğu şeklinde sıklıkla tarif edilmektedir. Bir eylemden önce vicdanın ahlaki yargıyı ne derecede bilgilendirdiği ve bu tür ahlaki yargıların akılcı mı yoksa temel alınması gerekip gerekmediği, batı felsefesinin tarihinin büyük bölümünde tartışmalara neden olmuştur. Dinsel vicdan düşünceleri genel olarak onu tüm insanlara, hayırsever bir evrene ve / veya tanrısallığa özgü ahlaka bağlı olarak görür.
