Alınan bir davranış kuralından türetilen standartların veya ilkelerin bir kütüğü olabilir veya bir insanın evrensel olması gerektiğine inandığı bir standarttan türetilebilir. Ahlak özellikle "iyilik" veya "haklılık" ile özdeş olabilir. Ahlaksızlık, ahlaki standartların veya ilkelerin herhangi bir kümesindeki bir bilinçsizlik, kayıtsızlığa veya kayıtsızlık olarak çeşitli şekillerde tanımlanırken ahlaksızlık ahlaka aktif muhalefettir.
