Bir deney, bir hipotezin geçerliliğini doğrulamak, reddetmek veya doğrulamak amacıyla yürütülen düzgün bir prosedürdür. Kontrollü deneyler, belirli bir faktör manipüle edildiğinde neticenin ortaya çıkıp çıkmadığını göstermek suretiyle neden-sonuç konusunda fikir verir. Kontrollü deneyler amaç ve ölçeğinde büyük farklılıklar gösterir ancak sonuçların tekrarlanabilir prosedür ve mantıksal analizlerine her zaman güvenirler. Ayrıca doğal deneysel çalışmalar da mevcuttur. Bir çocuğun, yerçekiminin doğasını anlamak için temel deneyler yapması mümkündür; bilim adamları ekipleri, bir olgunun anlayışını geliştirmek için yıllarca sistematik soruşturma yapabilir.
