Film noir, esas olarak şık Hollywood suç dramalarını, özellikle de alaycı tutumları ve cinsel motivasyonları vurgulamak için kullanılan sinemasal bir terimdir. Hollywood'un klasik filmi noir dönemi, genellikle 1940'ların başından 1950'lerin sonlarına doğru uzanır. Bu döneme ait film noir, Alman Ekspresyonist sinematografisinde kök salmış düşük anahtarlı bir siyah-beyaz görsel stille ilgilidir. Prototipik öykülerden birçoğu ve klasik noir tutumunun büyük kısmı, Büyük Depresyon sırasında Amerika Birleşik Devletleri'nde ortaya çıkan, suçtan kurtarılan aşırı derecede haşlanmış okuldan kaynaklanmaktadır. 1946'da Fransız eleştirmeni Nino Frank tarafından Hollywood filmlerine ilk uygulanan "siyah film" için Fransızca olan film noir terimi, o dönemin pek çok Amerikan film endüstrisi uzmanı tarafından tanınmadı. Sinema tarihçileri ve eleştirmenler kategoriyi geriye dönük olarak tanımladılar. Nosyon 1970'lerde yaygın bir biçimde benimsenmeden önce, klasik filmlerin bazılarına melodramlar deniyordu. Film noirinin farklı bir türe sahip olup olmadığı âlimler arasında devam etmekte olan bir tartışma meselesidir.
