İşletmeler ayrıca kar amacı gütmeyen veya devlete ait olmayan şirketler olabilir. Birden fazla kişiye ait bir işletme, bir şirket olarak anılabilir. "Ticari" etimolojisi, meşgul olma fikrinden kaynaklanır ve toplumsal açıdan değerli ve ödüllendirici bir çalışma anlamına gelir.
