Odak grubu, bir grup insana, algıları, görüşleri, inançları ve ürün, hizmet, konsept, reklam, düşünce veya ambalajla ilgili tutumları hakkında sorulan bir nitel araştırma biçimidir. Katılımcılar, diğer grup üyeleriyle konuşmak için ücretsiz olan interaktif bir grup ortamında sorular sorulur. İlk odak grup Ernest Dichter'ın evinde garajının üzerine inşa ettiği bir odada yapıldı. İlk odak grupları, ABD'de Uygulamalı Sosyal Araştırma Bürosunda, yardımcı direktör sosyolog Robert K. Merton tarafından oluşturuldu. Terim psikolog ve pazarlama uzmanı Ernest Dichter tarafından hazırlandı.
