Cihaz en çok Fransız Devrimi sırasında, "popüler kültürün bir parçası haline geldiğinde" Fransa'da kullanıldığı için bilinir ve devrimin destekçileri tarafından halkın avenger olarak kutlanır ve şöhretin en belirgin sembolü olarak nitelendirilir. Giyotin Devrimden çok sonra kullanılmaya devam etti ve Fransa'nın standart idari usulü olarak 1981'de Başkan François Mitterrand'ın desteğiyle ölüm cezasının kaldırılmasına kadar devam etti. Fransa'da giyilen son kişi Hamida'ydı Djandoubi tarafından 10 Eylül 1977'de düzenlendi. Giyotin diğer ülkelerde de istihdam edildi.Nazi Almanya'da 16.500 mağdur gördü, aynı zamanda Doğu Almanya'daki Stasi tarafından gizli idamlar için kullanıldı.
