Dini kullanımdaki hadisler genellikle "gelenek" olarak tercüme edilir, yani İslam peygamber Muhammed'in öğretileri, eylemleri ve sözleri üzerine bir rapor. Hadis Edebiyatı, Muhammed'in ölümünden çok sonra, derleme zamanında toplumda mevcut olan sözlü raporlardan derlenmiştir. Birçok geleneksel dini bilim insanı tarafından en 'güvenilir' olarak kabul edilen Buhari'nin koleksiyonu, Peygamberin ölümünden iki yüzyıl sonra derlendi. Hadis raporlarında Muhammed'in veya Şii İmamların / Dini liderlerin arkadaşları gibi İslam'ın ilk yıllarının önemli karakterlerinden kaynaklandığı iddia ediliyor. Bu hadis rivâyetleri, Kur'an ile ilgili olarak içerdikleri çelişkilere rağmen, "İslam hukuku" modellerinin tartışmalı temelini oluşturmuştur; örneğin hadislerdeki Zina cezası Kuran ile çelişir, Zekat oranları, Ribba vb. Hadislerin Kur'an'daki yorumların kalıplanması üzerinde derin etkisi vardır.
