Bir mezuzah, Tevrat'ta belirtilen İbrani âyetlerinin yazılı olduğu bir parşömen parçasıdır. Bu ayetler, "İsa İsa, İsa RAB'be, RABBİR" deyimiyle başlayan Yahudi dua "Shema Yisrael" i dileğini içermektedir: Yahudilerin evlerinde, mezuzah, kelimeleri yazacak olan mitzvayı yerine getirmek için kapı çerçevesine yapıştırılmıştır. Shema'nın "evinin kapı direkleri üzerinde" bulunması. Bazıları Yahudi kanunlarını, banyodan başka evdeki her kapıda bir mezuzah, oda olarak nitelemek için çok küçük dolaplar gerektirecek şekilde yorumluyor. Parşömen yıllarca titiz bir eğitimden geçmiş nitelikli bir yazar tarafından hazırlanır ve ayetler özel kalemle siyah silinmez mürekkeple yazılır. Parşömen daha sonra sarılır ve kasanın içine yerleştirilir.
