En geniş anlamda doğa, doğal, fiziksel veya maddi dünyaya veya evrene eşdeğerdir. "Doğa", fiziksel dünyanın olgusuna ve genel olarak hayatın durumuna atıfta bulunur. Kütlenin altından kozmik seviyesine kadar değişir. Doğanın anlamı, Latince natura sözcüğünden ya da "temel nitelikler, doğuştan doğuş" türetilmiştir ve antik zamanlarda kelimenin tam anlamıyla "doğum" anlamına geliyordu. Natura, başlangıçta dünyanın, bitkilerinin, hayvanların ve diğer özelliklerin kendi gelişmeleriyle geliştiği öz nitelikleri ile ilgili olan Yunanca fizis'in bir Latince tercümesiydi. Bir bütün olarak doğa kavramı olan fiziksel evren orijinal kavramın birkaç genişletmesinden biridir; Sokrat-öncesi filozoflar tarafından φύσις sözcüğünün bazı çekirdek uygulamaları ile başlamış ve o zamandan beri düzenli olarak para kazanmıştır. Bu kullanım son birkaç yüzyılda modern bilimsel metodun ortaya çıkışı boyunca devam etti. Bugünkü sözcüğün çeşitli kullanımları içinde, "doğa" sıklıkla jeoloji ve yaban hayatı anlamına gelir.
